Britt Orchestra: Rite of Spring

NPR’s Performance Today says of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, “Almost no musical work has had such a powerful influence or evoked as much controversy.” When it premiered in 1913, with its primitive and dissonant music, unusual ballet choreography, and Russian pagan setting, it was met with derision and riots. The orchestral work, however, has stood the test of time, and its premiere is often called one of the greatest moments in Western Art. This will be the first-ever Britt performance of the great work.

OBF: Mahler's Symphony No. 2

Nicole Cabell, soprano
Roxana Constantinescu, mezzo-soprano
Berwick Chorus
UO Chamber Choir
OBF Orchestra
Matthew Halls, conductor

Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony, also known as “Resurrection,” is an epic choral orchestral work that evokes both strength and contemplation. One of the largest symphonies ever created in terms of power, drama and harmonic boldness, it relays the story of life: the essential quest for understanding, and coming to terms with both life’s challenges.

OBF: St. John Passion: Rilling Conducts

Joanne Lunn, soprano
Roxana Constantinescu, mezzo-soprano
Nicholas Phan, tenor
Tyler Duncan, baritone
Nathan Berg, bass
Berwick Chorus
OBF Orchestra
Helmuth Rilling, conductor

Featuring the highly acclaimed tenor soloist Nicholas Phan as the Evangelist, Bach’s sacred masterwork, St. John Passion conveys heated drama and striking emotional power. This captivating work depicts Christ’s crucifixion and the events that preceded it, and was originally composed for Bach’s first Good Friday in Leipzig. It also marks the start of Maestro Rilling’s 45-year exploration of Bach’s most poignant statements of faith, as the first sacred masterwork that he conducted at the Oregon Bach Festival.
