Britt Orchestra: Rite of Spring
NPR’s Performance Today says of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, “Almost no musical work has had such a powerful influence or evoked as much controversy.” When it premiered in 1913, with its primitive and dissonant music, unusual ballet choreography, and Russian pagan setting, it was met with derision and riots. The orchestral work, however, has stood the test of time, and its premiere is often called one of the greatest moments in Western Art. This will be the first-ever Britt performance of the great work.

Gustav Mahlers Second Symphony, also known as Resurrection, is an epic choral orchestral work that evokes both strength and contemplation. One of the largest symphonies ever created in terms of power, drama and harmonic boldness, it relays the story of life: the essential quest for understanding, and coming to terms with both lifes challenges.

Featuring the highly acclaimed tenor soloist Nicholas Phan as the Evangelist, Bachs sacred masterwork, St. John Passion conveys heated drama and striking emotional power. This captivating work depicts Christs crucifixion and the events that preceded it, and was originally composed for Bachs first Good Friday in Leipzig. It also marks the start of Maestro Rillings 45-year exploration of Bachs most poignant statements of faith, as the first sacred masterwork that he conducted at the Oregon Bach Festival.
